Empowerment of Refugees and Migrants

An Integrative Approach For Individuals, Couples, Families and Groups

Therapy, Treatment and Support for Traumatized and Victims of Torture and Violence

The Refugee's Life-World (Lebenswelt) is Starting Point for all Acitivities of our Beratungszentrum.

This Life World is highly dependent on the Experiences of the Respective Person and therefore calls for an individualized treatment.

This Life World also is one of Common Fate (gemeinsames Schicksal) insofar as the have comparable experiences of being expelled from their home country and being treated as a group of strangers in the host country.

The Life World is Limited, has more or less Resistent Borders with Regards to my own Capability and the Indulgence of the Environment

The Refugee's Problems all are social Problems and refer to Conflicts with persons, institutions, rules, regulations and morals.

They need a social approach:

  • In individual therapy patient learns to find a re-integration of him/herself as a social being able to trust and to receive help as well as being responsible and helpful.
  • In couple-therapy the patients learn to appreciate their relationship as a ressource for overcoming the bad things in life instead of blaming each other and destroying each other.
  • In family therapy the patients learn to analyze their conflicts and their effects in terms of intergenerational infection (heredity or transmission)
  • In group therapy the patients learn to express themselves in a way that they understand their own experiences and make them understandable for others.

Psychology and Art as an Integrative Whole

Goal of therapy is re-integration of the personality within a situation that is broken in many respects.

This re-integration includes an integration of personality in a broken biography, an integration into the social environment (Mitwelt), where basic trust is broken, an integration of the individual capacity of action with the acceptance of unchangeable negative life events.

The therapy includes awareness of the situation, confidence in the action potential, and setting of realistic goals. It includes educational parts (art techniques and psychoeducational informations), as well as self experience and creating structures of action and action plans.

In the following some reference points are shown by using focal key terms.

Flow and Strucure

Migrants are more or less traumatized (in their home country, during flight and migration, in the host country) In case of extreme traumatization the patients often appear to be frozen as a reaction to an overflow in the overwhelming traumatizing life event. During therapy the paralysis is to be changed into a structured fluidity.

Care and Cure

The Life World of the Refugee is defined also by restrictive laws, rules, and regulations. Refugees need real help in real life. As strangers they don't know how to act. Therefore, they get care by social workers. They are caring emotionally, but also actively supportive as long as they can't act for themselves.

Caring is rather a part of therapy than a supplement to it.

Movement and Momentum

Therapy is basically movement as part of the individual development in a situation of actual geographical movement (migration). Therapists are accompanying refugees and migrants in their way throughaout their live course including past, present and future. The therapeutical art means finding the turning point in this process and enhancing its power as a momentum in the change to a healthy development of the person.

c r o n o V  and  k a i r o V
(Chronos and kairos ... 'time' and 'care' might give you an idea of these Ancient Greek words).

Therapy is seen as a re-construction of the person's biography. The chronological lifecourse is determined by plans and actions, but also by life events, which are beyond control of the individual. Within therapy the individual is enabled to recognize the possibilities for action in the occurences of life, an ability of timing of action of making use of the suitable time (kairos) within the course of time (chronos).
